FRS Summer Splash to take to airwaves next month

Image
FRS Summer Splash to take to airwaves next month : Dear FRS Friends! The time has finally come... After a (too...) long break, FRS-Holland will return to the airwaves in July/August. A combination of circumstances forced us to be inactive for more than 6 months. We do regret this inactivity but with new energy we will soon return to the shortwave airwaves. Good news: all familiar FRS voices will join: Jan, Mike, Bert, Dave & Peter V. Important: our website frsholland.nl will be offline for a while because we switch to a new provider. That implies we will build a new site starting in July/ August. At the same time you cannot check our website for the latest details regarding the FRS Summer Splash. In this mail we will supply the most important information, share it with any radio friend/ colleague! We hope those who run a blog will share the info with their readers. Thanks in advance!! FRS Summer Splash Following last year's successful edition, we hope you will ...

1984 Offshore Documentary with Lawrie Hallett : This time we have been given permission by Lawrie Hallett to play out his other pirate documentary. You may remember episode 21 where he talked to some of the London Land Based Pirates of the early 80’s. Well, this time he covers the offshore pirates up to 1984 and includes exclusive interviews with Ronan O’Rahilly, Tony Blackburn and John Peel about their time with the ships.  Mark Wakely

Ian Harling - Radio Cavendish (SW), South Coast Radio (MW & FM) : This week we are again outside London. We're off to the south coast with Ian Harling from Radio Cavendish and South Coast Radio among  others. Here how they smuggled a FM transmitter from the Netherlands and another transmitter across to France for a one off broadcast back to the UK. Tales of cat and mouse antics with the authorities and once again Nick Catford pops up in the story. Great stuff from Ian. Mark Wakely

It’s getting easier to make an account on Mastodon

It’s getting easier to make an account on Mastodon : Image: Mastodon Mastodon is making it easier for newcomers to create an account on the platform. On Monday, the decentralized network announced that it will start directing new users to create an account on mastodon.social instead of prompting them to choose from one of the thousands of other servers on the platform. This update doesn’t mean that Mastodon’s taking away the ability for new users to sign up for an account in a specific community, though. It will simply present two separate options on its signup page: “Join mastodon.social” or “Pick my own server.” The service’s flagship mastodon.social server is the platform’s largest, but the network notes that users can swap instances at any time. Prior to this change, creating a Mastodon account wasn’t... Continue reading…

Chris Cooper - Empire Radio (SW), EST (Birmingham), Voice of Peace and Radio Caroline

Chris Cooper - Empire Radio (SW), EST (Birmingham), Voice of Peace and Radio Caroline : This time Mark Wakely chats to Chris Cooper from Birmingham. He was one of the people behind Empire Radio, the short wave pirate, then went on to found the Birmingham FM pirate EST before going on to The Voice of Peace and Radio Caroline. He can now be heard regularly on Radio Seagull. He is a great story teller with a great memory of his pirate days.  Pirates of the Airwaves by Mark Wakely
