Freedom Bookshop attack: a statement : A group of far-right activists decided the most interesting thing they could do with their afternoon today (October 31st) was stand around outside Freedom Bookshop, shouting overwrought gibberish. While such low-effort cosplayers are of course free to embarrass themselves on public streets, the attempted intimidation and harassment of both people in the shop and passers by – including one person who they physically attacked – was shameful behaviour. Thanks to the quick thinking of one of our volunteers, the shop was quickly locked, so no damage was done in the building itself. Our thanks go to them and everyone who, as soon as the warning went out about a far-right presence, dropped everything to head down in solidarity. We expect no better from the “protect our communities” mob, whose “protection” amounts to little more than schoolyard bullying. Colombia’s government presents “Economic Rescue Bill” : Colombia’s Vice-President Jose Manuel Restrepo on Thursday presented an Economic Rescue Bill that seeks to reduce government spending and increase its revenue. The bill grants extraordinary powers to President Abelardo de la Espriella to slash government spending by decree and includes a tax reform that includes higher sales tax rates on gasoline, coffee, cigarettes and vegetables. The bill also includes tax breaks for corporations in an attempt to increase investment.
